The former Japan Industrial Gases Association (JIGA) was established to integrate various industrial gas associations, including the Oxygen Association, the Dissolved Acetylene Association, the Carbon Dioxide Association, the Specialty Gas Association, the Helium Association, and the Hydrogen Association that represented the industrial gas industry.

JIGA and the Japan Medical Gases Association merged as of October 1, 2007 and started out anew as the Japan Industrial and Medical Gases Association (JIMGA).

In the global area, international standards governing technology and safety are being established, mainly among groups in the United States and Europe, such as CGA and EIGA. JIMGA has been formed to reflect the views of Japan concerning these standards.

Domestically, JIMGA serves the vital function of establishing the autonomy of the industrial gas industry in setting its own standards as the Japanese government begins to review the High Pressure Gas Safety Law and considers deregulation governing technical and safety standards.

JIMGA has been created to better represent the industrial gas industry in Japan and to respond to the numerous changes taking place today.
